Update: CCP Explorer Mentioned that the DUST514 server is managed at the Iceland and Shanghai Studios.
CCP has announced that it’s San Francisco Studio has closed and two executives (the CMO and CFO) have left CCP Games.
The San Fran team mainly worked on
managing the DUST514 server and marketing for the canned game World Of Darkness (which was pushed into the voids of space.) CCP Games is refocusing it’s efforts on Project Legion which will merge the worlds of DUST514, EVE Online and Valkyrie into one persistent universe. DUST514 seems to be on it’s way out as CCP is refocusing it’s efforts on a persistent world exclusively for the PC platform. DUST514’s server systems merged into EVE’s main server cluster known as tranquility. This means some users may suffer higher pings (sorry Aussies!)
The World of Darkness
The world of darkness was a very adventurous MMO using the technology developed inside EVE Online (both the cabin engine and CCP’s own in-house engine for eve) The idea had great promise and source materials based on the comics expanding the universe was truly epic in proportions. The game did have leaked screenshots which you can probably find on RPS *Hint Hint* The studios working on the game closed eariler this year as CCP Games restructured it’s business to focus just on the EVE Intellectual property.
The Dust effect
CCP Games’s focus on the DUST514 F2P model was flawed. Many people play the game for free however it’s the type of game that wont bring all interest levels in. Project Legion main goal is to try and make an accessible eve online game for everyone using the oculus as a new form of relation. CCP Games still has studios in Iceland, UK, America and Shanghai (DUST is currently being maintained by the Reykjavík and Shanghai Studios)
