CCP has announced in an upcoming Dev Blog that they are planning major changes to the User Interface after 11 years with the current one.
The User Interface Overhaul has been long coming to EVE Online, The first preview redesign was pushed out during 2013/14 window however it was met with a luke warm reception. The main focus of the UI was a shift from Black to Red (the expansion’s color scheme)
In addition in the recent expasions, (Phoebe and Crius) there have been many small improvements to the user interface and to the searching system behind the interface. CCP is attempting to create smaller fixes that help make the bigger experiences better.
The New UI Overhaul
So your wondering how rapid the change could be for the interface, Here’s a screenshot from the blog.
- The interface is transparent (when moving around the camera)
- The interface has different color schemes for different races (from what we can see.)
- The interface is inspired by minmal and militaristic design.
- The overview icons will mainly be outlined silhouettes as this is ment to improve the response time.
The new UI overhaul has some interesting design goals, CCP Optic claims the current interface reminds him more of “Operating System” however the new changes will ensure that the interface is more futuristic and militaristic.
CCP decided to strip the current color schemes out as they have been testing a more simplified UI without color. according to there research, The overall speed of movement around the UI increases as your brian is able to take in more functionality with simplificaiton of the interface.
The new UI is currently viewable on the test server. After players have provided feedback, The team is aiming to deploy the update in December’s Rhea update scheduled for 9th December 2014.
What we are thinking…
The new UI is certainly a major change in EVE’s history. The current UI is customisable however the complexity of the neocom and navigational elements really do affect first time users. (The often shown comic of EVE’s diffculty level could very well attribute the UI to the major downfall in interest.) CCP really wants to focus on making EVE more user friendly, the best steps to fixing many of the underlying problems is to revamp the user interface completely. The complete overhaul of the interface has had some postive feedback from people currently testing the interface in the test server. The new interface will upset some long playing users. Afterall the interface has been the same for many years and change will be hard but if the new changes improve the experience users will embrase them.
