Our editor @OliPicard was fortunate enough to play EVE Valkyrie 3 times at EGX 2014, Here’s are his initial thoughts on EVE Valkyrie.
EVE Valkyrie is an interesting simulator game using some of the most advanced technology elements at this moment in time. Coupling together UE4 and DK2 in what can be described as an EVE Online Lover’s dream.
You start inside the launching system of a mothership. This launching sequence reminds me of Battlestar Galatia. The lighting system has a multiude of lens flares and shader’s. You hear a countdown being initialized while dialog from a captain is being played. Your objective is simple. You have 5 Minutes to protect the ship from enemy bad guys.
The Lock-On System.
EVE Vaklyire uses an interesting lock-on system that uses your head’s location to lock onto the target. You hold down the right trigger and 6 small circles appear. Once they appear you release the trigger and watch the rockets deploy. If timed correctly this affect can be really satisfying.
The Oculus (For People with Glasses)
I found that the Oculus Rift for long sighted people can cause some minor blurriness however this is overlooked after playing the game for a couple of sessions. In addition the resolution is still pretty low quality in a age of retina micro pixel technology it seems the Oculus is lagging behind. In addition I would recommend anyone who has not played or used an Oculus before playing with EVE Valkyrie to please try a different game. EVE Valkyrie suffers from motion blur and can make you feel a bit car/ship sick. However over time this motion sickness does ware off.
Finally when you die, your ship’s glass cabin explodes with your body floating out into the endless space. The screen goes black and you respawn back at the ship.
This was one of the few games I kept going back to at EGX 2014. Already invested in the EVE Universe this experience is an awesome extension. Hopefully in the future we will see Valkyrie, EVE Online and Leigon inter-connect. Until that day this game will be a good start.
Platforms and Release Date
EVE: Valkyrie is coming to PS4’s Project Morpheus and Oculus Rift (PC).
EVE Valkyrie currently doesn’t have a release date, however after the consumer Oculus Rift is launched one can imagine that CCP may release the game. It seems very much ready for the big center stage.
