RSI announced that they have been working on a major overhaul of the targeting systems inside Star Citizen.
Roberts Space Industries (RSI) has deployed patch 0.9.2 with a major update to the targeting systems. Spearheaded by John Pritchett (The Physics and Flight Model Expert.)
Full Patch Notes of today’s announcement can be found at RSI.
Enhanced Stick Precision (E.S.P)
The Enhanced Stick Precision system was developed with joysticks in mind, The E.S.P system will relay data to the Improved Targeting System. With absolute values triggered with E.S.P. you will be alble to break off a target (for example you could be targeting one ship and another one comes behind you to attack, in this circumstance you would have to break off to enter a defensive role.) The E.S.P. Maginifys your overall stick output and rewards your accuracy. The E.S.P. system will also be used for Mouse Inputs (known as the virtual joystick)
ITTS (Improved Target Tracking System)
The ITTS has been sigificantly improved with PIPs providing an overlay showing the predicted trajectory of each weapon system uniquelly, Previously this system was a single unified main weapon PIP however as new weapon systems come online the auto-targeting system has to change to provide the right feel of gameplay balance. The PIPs will not overlap the target to ensure the pilot can focus on his target over his sights. In addition the PIP system will have lagged sights, These will ensure the pilot can feel how each type of system will react. Firing a weapon will also make the heads up PIP flash to show the weapon system firing.
The targeting HUD will now provide a better visual reference of the speed of a outbound target. The target system will “open up” to allow players to focus on the inbound threat.
New Ship added to Hanger
The Gladius is a precursor to the Hornet fighter series Ships. The Gladius had a short one week sale and for those lucky enough to get there hands on the ship where granted a lifetime insurance. (Most other packages only include a 3/6 month insurance package) The Gladius is an epic piece of modern spaceflight history in the star citizen universe. RSI has announced that the Gladius will be a perminant ship on the store. It’s current price is $90usd and is available from the RSI Store/Blog Post
Here’s some screenshots we was able to take once the update had finished.
What we think
This new update will help with assisting with certain play styles and hardware systems. Players with TrackIR will certainly know the difference between 0.8 and 0.9.2. The new system has had a mixed reception on the star citizen forums with some traiditonl wing commander users annoyed by the fact that the old school targeting system is being revamped. Only time will tell if the new system will become a hit or miss. Chris Roberts certainly wants better handling and hope this is a step in the right direction.
